An Introduction to Focused Ultrasound (HIFU)
High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) is a safe and effective method for achieving non-surgical face lifts, eyebrow lifts, neck tightening, and body contouring. This advanced technology works by delivering focused soundwaves deep into the skin, causing thermal coagulation in the dermis and the SMAS (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System) layers. This process tightens existing tissue and stimulates the body's natural production of new collagen. The latest generation of this technology, known as Micro & Macro Focused Ultrasound (MF-HIFU), is clinically proven to be highly effective. It allows for precise targeting of different tissue depths, making it a versatile tool for a wide range of lifting and tightening concerns.
How is the HIFU Procedure Performed?
During a treatment, the HIFU device's handpiece is placed directly against the patient's skin. The device is equipped with various heads that allow the focused thermal energy to penetrate to different, specific depths (e.g., 1.5mm, 3mm, 4.5mm, 6mm, or 9mm). Your doctor will determine the appropriate depth based on your skin's condition, the area being treated, and the desired outcome. A key benefit of HIFU is that the surface of the skin remains completely unaffected. The focused energy works exclusively in the deeper layers, triggering new collagen growth that, over time, creates a natural, non-surgical lifting effect.
What to Expect During and After Treatment
How long does it take? The length of the procedure varies depending on the size of the treatment area. On average, a full-face treatment takes a maximum of 30-45 minutes. Is it painful? The sensation felt varies from person to person, but patients typically describe it as being similar to a quick needle prick. This feeling is a positive sign that the focused soundwaves have reached the targeted tissue and that the skin tightening process has been successfully initiated. How many sessions are needed? For most people, HIFU achieves the desired results in just a single session. However, in cases of more significant sagging, two or three sessions may be necessary to achieve the optimal outcome. When will results become visible? The rejuvenation process begins immediately, and some patients may notice a light lifting effect right after the procedure. However, the body needs time to produce new collagen. The effects will become more noticeable after about one month, with the final, clear result becoming fully visible after 45 to 60 days as the skin continues to improve each day.
Is HIFU the Right Treatment for You?
HIFU is an excellent option for anyone experiencing loose or sagging skin on the face or body. It achieves particularly clear and effective results for individuals between the ages of 30 and 65. However, HIFU is not suitable for everyone. The treatment should not be used in the following situations:
- On individuals with active skin infections, such as herpes.
- On people with implanted electronic devices like pacemakers or metal stents in the treatment area.
- On those with medical conditions that prevent proper wound healing or blood-clotting, such as hemophilia.
- On individuals with certain autoimmune illnesses.
- On those with uncontrolled diabetes or epilepsy.
- On children or pregnant women.
